Transitional

One partner pins tufted sofas, the other pins bare concrete. Transitional design keeps both languages visible in the same home.

Couples who renovate together often bring different reference images. One board is full of ornate mouldings and traditional silhouettes. The other is stark and almost bare. Transitional design is meant for this situation, since it lets two visual languages sit in one home and neither has to win.

The main technique is alternation, and it does not mean blending. Classic and modern pieces stay recognisable, placed close together instead of merged into a middle-ground finish. A kitchen shows it clearly: shaker cabinetry with a raised-panel frame next to a sleek quartz countertop and handleless integrated appliances.

Furniture works the same way. A tufted roll-arm sofa can sit beside a minimalist steel-framed coffee table, deliberately unmatched. Scale is what makes this work, because pieces of similar visual weight keep either from looking like an afterthought.

Hybrid pieces help with the shift between zones. A Windsor-style chair rebuilt in matte black steel could belong in either register.

Colour discipline matters more than matching furniture. A quiet palette of warm off-whites, layered neutrals and consistent wood tones holds a room together as silhouettes change. Transitional rooms more often fail because the colours are inconsistent than because the furniture clashes.

Mr Shopper Studio, registered in Singapore since 2014 and based at Vertex on Ubi Avenue 3, offers transitional interior design for condominiums. It describes the style as a mix of traditional and modern elements.
