How to Choose an Interior Designer in Singapore

Hiring an interior designer is closer to hiring a contractor for a long project than to buying a product. A renovation runs for months, involves large upfront payments and is hard to reverse once demolition starts. That justifies more scrutiny than a polished Instagram feed.

Look at completed projects, not renders. A 3D render can flatter a layout that feels cramped in real life, and its lighting never has to deal with an actual corridor. Completed work, ideally seen in person or in unedited photographs, shows how a firm handles awkward columns, low false ceilings and tight budgets.

Ask to speak to a past client, ideally one with a similar property and scope. A firm confident in its finish quality will often arrange this. Reluctance is worth noting, though privacy can be a fair reason.

Check credentials with the issuer, not the firm's website. In Singapore, that can include HDB registration for HDB work, CaseTrust accreditation and BizSafe certification. Firms such as Areana Creation and Space Factor state they are HDB-registered, and FC Interior Design states it is CaseTrust accredited and BizSafe Star certified. Verify any such claim with HDB, CASE or the relevant body before relying on it.

Put the same three questions to every firm in the same order. How do they handle scope changes, and what does that cost in money and time? Who will you deal with day to day, the designer who pitched or a junior you have not met? How do they price beyond the first quote, and what triggers a variation order?

Ask for an itemised quote that separates design fees, carpentry, electrical and plumbing, and contingency. Two firms can quote the same total with very different scopes, and only the line items show it. Read the contract for payment milestones, the defects liability period and what happens if either side wants to end the engagement.

Match the firm to the job. A practice known for Good Class Bungalows is not automatically the right fit for a modest HDB renovation, and the reverse is also true. Ask how many projects the firm is running at once, and take three to four weeks for the whole process so you can compare proposals without pressure.
