The Brief Is to Not Look Expensive

Good Class Bungalow interiors sit at the top of Singapore's residential market. A brief that comes up often at that level is the reverse of make it look expensive. Owners, especially of long-established family homes, tend to be wary of interiors that read as a display of spending. That has pushed contemporary luxury toward a quieter, more material-led look.

Material Honesty as the Through-Line

Material honesty is the through-line. Book-matched marble, where slabs cut from one block are mirrored along the seam so the veining runs continuously, is a common choice for entry halls and double-height living spaces. The effect depends on the stone alone, with no applied finish or lighting trick. Panels are typically cut and numbered at the quarry, because a veining mismatch at that scale is hard to fix on site.

Honed stone, with a matte and tactile surface, reads as more restrained than high-gloss polish. Designers who select blocks directly at the source can also control colour consistency.

Hardware is often custom. Door handles, cabinet pulls and balustrade fittings in brushed bronze develop a soft patina with handling. Custom fabrication usually takes several prototype rounds, which adds months that experienced firms plan for from the start.

Hand-applied finishes such as Venetian plaster, built up in thin layers, give a feature wall depth that shifts through the day under directional light. Furniture and joinery stay spare, with minimal visible hardware, so the materials carry the room.

Who Works at This Scale

Summerhaus D'zign, based at Cendex Centre on Lower Delta Road, has worked only on private residential projects since 2012. Its work is concentrated in landed homes across Districts 9, 10 and 11, including Good Class Bungalow interiors. It has been named among Tatler's Top 50 Influential Names in Singapore Design and has had coverage in Tatler and The Peak.

A project at this scale rarely runs on a single supplier relationship. Book-matched stone, custom bronze hardware and hand-applied plaster each typically involve a different specialist fabricator, which is part of why Good Class Bungalow timelines run longer than a standard landed renovation even before construction itself begins.
